On Wednesday, June 22, 2011, beginning at 7:15 p.m., Karen Kumm Morris will discuss the best practices for planting trees in urban settings – both on residential properties and in public parks.  Learn more about the latest techniques:  Expanded Tree Pit, Cornell University Structural Soil, Root Pathways, Continuous Soil Panel, and Silva Cells. From 6:45 – 7:15 PM there will be a short meeting with elections for TreeSteward members.

Ms. Morris, an urban designer and landscape architect recently retired from Montgomery County, will discuss the range of options and the pros and cons of these modern techniques. She will also provide insight into how informed, tree-loving citizens like you can play a role in improving our community’s urban street tree plantings.

Recently retired from a 25-year career with the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, her work includes land use master plans, design guidelines, and streetscape plans for communities ranging from Friendship Heights and Bethesda to Shady Grove and Germantown. She has won several community planning awards from the American Planning Association and an Honor Award from the Potomac Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. She was appointed to the Arlington County Urban Forestry Commission in 2010.

On an equally accomplished note, Ms. Morris is also a watercolorist, having painted in the Washington, DC, area for over 20 years – with shows at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, VA, and Strathmore Hall in Bethesda, MD.
