Arlington County provides the trees, handles registration and logistics for residents to get a free tree from the county nursery on October 13. Meanwhile, TreeStewards provide the education to homeowners and grounds committees to select the best tree for their locations as well as being present throughout pickup day to answer questions and demonstrate tree care. It’s a perfect partnership!
Since the goal of the program is to ensure Arlington’s tree canopy remains healthy and sustainable, selecting the Right Tree for the Right Place in your yard is a vital component. TreeStewards want to help you determine whether that very large American Beech that loves moist soil or the understory Spicebush that hosts butterflies is your best choice. Here are some simple steps to ensure you reserve the Right Tree:
1. Go to http://treedistribution.eventbrite.com/ . PRINT THIS PAGE listing the tree species and guidelines before requesting any tree.
2. Before you request your tree, research its mature size and preferred planting location at http://woodyplants.mannlib.cornell.edu/index.php. Using your printed list, make notes which tree is the right size for your yard given the amount of sun and moisture available.
Overhead Wires Alert: Only the Spicebush can be planted directly under overhead wires. Check the guidelines for other planting locations at http://caseytrees.org/resources/right-tree-right-space/
3. Once you’ve decided which one tree is best for your yard, Register for your tree online.
Want help deciding which tree will grow best in your location? A TreeSteward volunteer can review your location and help you make your decision. Request assistance by Planting A Seed in our Suggestion Box or email us info@TreeStewards.org
Condos, homeowners associations, churches, clubs and other groups may request additional trees once they show sufficient planting locations. Please sketch a map showing where the requested tree species could be planted and then request a TreeSteward volunteer to review your plans at info@TreeStewards.org. You can then register your request for multiple trees. The number of trees you can receive is based on the availability of good planting locations as well as the availability of trees.
